Aminoaciduria and megaloblastic anaemia.
Urinary amino-acid chromatograms from 23 patients with megaloblastic anaemia have been studied before and after therapy. The most consistent abnormality was an increased taurine or increased taurine/glycine ratio. This was not related directly to deficiency of vitamin B(12) or folic acid or to the degree of anaemia.

IN 1877 Muller described a marked bronzed discoloration of the skin in some patients considered to have pernicious anaemia. This observation, confirmed later by Immerman (1879) is likely to be the first record of an association between a macrocytic type of anemia and haemochromatosis. Since that time French (1909), Roth (1915), Bork (1928), Cain (1940), Hotz (1944) and Harvier and Mallarme (193...
متن کاملMalarial anaemia and nitric oxide induced megaloblastic anaemia: a review on the causes of malarial anaemia.
Direct destruction and ineffective erythropoesis does not adequately explain the cause of anaemia in malaria. It is possible that there are more other mechanisms involved besides the causes described till date in malarial anaemia. The effect of NO on erythropoesis and a major haematological abnormality (microcytic/normocytic/megaloblastic picture) can significantly be observed on repeated expos...
متن کاملPotassium changes in megaloblastic anaemia.
1. Serial measurements of serum potasssium and total-body potassium were made on eighteen patients with megaloblastic anaemia before the start of therapy and during the period of recovery. 2. In those patients who presented with an initial packed cell volume of less than 25%, a mean decrease in serum potassium of 0.4 mmol/1 occurred on average with 2.5 days of the start of therapy. This was f...
متن کاملAcidosis and severe megaloblastic anaemia.
Ten patients with severe megaloblastic anaemia were studied to investigate whether the causative metabolic defects might predispose them to lactic or other acidosis. One patient had compensated acidosis with hyperlactataemia before treatment but there were obvious causes other than anaemia. No other patient developed an acidosis. Neither anaemia per se nor the metabolic defects of vitamin B(12)...
